What is it?

The noisy sounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the flow of air through the back of the mouth and nose. This area is the collapsible part of the airway where the tongue and upper throat meet the soft palate and uvula. Snoring occurs when these structures get close to touching each other and vibrate during breathing. When they do touch each other and don't vibrate, then that individual has one apneic event.  An apneic event is a pause in breathing and can last from at least ten seconds to several minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour.

Snoring is a serious event.  Not only is it an annoyance to your bed partner, preventing them from having a good night's sleep or having to spend the night in another room, it is also a sign of a health risk.  It could be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea.  Obstructive sleep apnea needs to be properly diagnosed by a licensed medical professional.

Treatment of snoring and/or obstructive sleep apnea with an oral appliance can often be a viable treatment option.

At TMJ-Sleep Colorado, we work directly with medical providers to make sure sleep problems are properly diagnosed and treated.
